In Narrative Therapy the client is the expert of their own life. Narrative therapy emphasizes collaboration, empowerment, and the creation of new, more hopeful narratives that allow individuals to move beyond their problems and limitations. In narrative therapy, people are viewed as separate from their problems, and are not defined by them. Instead, the focus is on exploring how problems have come to be a part of a person's story, and how they can be addressed and re-framed in a way that allows for new possibilities and perspectives. The therapist acts as a collaborator, working with the client to explore and create new narratives that reflect their experiences and perspectives while honoring the broader social and cultural contexts in which clients live.
