ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) is an evidence based approach that assists clients in using acceptance, mindfulness strategies, & committed action to increase psychological flexibility. This flexibility allows clients to be more present & embodied, providing them more access to live their life by their chosen values. ACT theorizes that client symptoms are caused by psychological inflexibility, which can derive from emotional inflexibility, cognitive inflexibility, attentional inflexibility, failures in perspective taking, lack of chosen values, and an inability to broaden and build habits of values-based action. Through metaphor, paradox, and experiential exercises clients learn how to make healthy contact with thoughts, feelings, memories, and physical sensations that have been feared and avoided.  For more information please read this article, check out this book: The Happiness Trap by Russ Harris or watch this video.
